Results for Basic Formatting Test Suite

Overall the testing was successful. The solution I determined if I want to use the iPad was to use the WordPress app on the iPad to make story updates. This ensures no data gets lost if there are network issues and it allows the most flexibility for formatting text.  Also, the editor on the app is much better than the one in the browser and it allows me to dictate text which I am a big fan of. However, I have not yet determined how to use a spellchecker on the app. But the iPad has a pretty decent built-in spellchecker.

What didn’t work so well was importing text into the web browser or into the app itself from anything. I tried importing from Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, and Evernote. But none of them were acceptable.

The testing has become so elaborate that I feel I need to start organizing it for future reference. I will attempt to do this through the use of categories and tags. Test cases thus far which are 1 through 11 will be moved into a category called basic formatting or some such.

Test Case 11.1 (Success)

I see that test case 11 is saved as a revision not yet posted. I can see it and easily selected. I am making this post to see if I can have two unposted entries.

The app seems to excel at keeping multiple revisions of different posts and then allowing me to post them at my discretion. I’m pleased with this.

Test Case 11 (Success)

This is to test multiple revisions. I’m typing this and then I’m going to try and save it. There is a small X at the top left of the screen that I’m going to click on to try and fix it and see if my changes get saved.

This was successful. And it was very easy as when I hit the little X it actually asked me if I wanted to save a draft. This would make a good off-line editing solution as long as I remember to update the rotation before parking the app.

Test Case 10 (Success and Solution)

Reading online, looks like the best option for me is to use the WordPress app. It is supposed to be “offline” by default and WYSIWYG. So I am going to experiment with this for a bit. After I type this sentence, I am going to force kill the app without saving and see what happens.

Ok that didn’t work. Fortunately I had done a select-all/copy. But OK maybe that wasn’t a realistic test. A better test would be for me to kill the network connection instead but leave the app alone although in the background.

Ok the pad is now in airplane mode and everything looks ok. Turning the network back on now. Now let’s try the usual formatting.

Here are some bullets:

  • Bullet1
  • Bullet2

Bold text

Italic text.

Not sure how to get red text, whoops I hit post by accident, but it looks like the test worked. So it looks like my best solution for editing data without the risk of losing it is to use the app on the iPad.

However this brings back some previously answered questions about revisions. The other question I have is that sometimes on the iPad apps seem to work OK one left in the background. But one left in the background for a long period of time, sometimes the data gets lost.

Since revisions don’t work on an already existing post, I will have to create a new test case for this.

I am also having some issues positioning the cursor within the text to make changes in different places. This is frustrating. I may download another word blog editing app to see if it works better than this one.

Test Case 9 (Failed)

This was entered in Word on iPad but this post was made from the app on the iPad.
Here is heading 1
This is from a document written in MS Word on the iPad. Here are some bullets:

• Bullet1

• Bullet2

Here is some red text.

Here is some bold text.

Here is some italic text.

Manually indented.

End of test.

Test case 8 (Failed)

In a fit of desperation, here is a copy/paste from Evernote. Also an utter failure.

Test case 6 (Failed)

I typed this into Word from the pad and copy/paste. This test is a failure.

Here is heading 1

Test case 5

For this test, I’m going to type in some stuff in a word document on the PC with headers and formatting and see if I can post it in here.

Heading1

Followed by normal text.

Here is a bullet list:

  • Bullet1
  • Bullet2

Some red text.

Some bold text.

Some italic text.

Some manually indented text.

End of test.

End of test.

That went “ok”. Everything came through except the red text. The second attempt was using the paragraph type “preformatted” but it had the same results.

As mush as I HATE HATE HATE HATE using my PC because it is so cumbersome and buggy, it seems that articles should be written in Word then copy/paste in here.

I suppose I could test from something like Apple “pages” and try pasting. Let’s try that as Test Case 6 tomorrow. Oh yeah, and I have test pasting in pics with the articles.

Test Case 4

Still dinking around with the revision thing. I haven found a way to do an unpublished revision on an existing post. You can abandon it, but you don’t get the revision indicator and will ask of you want to restore when you edit it again, but that’s too risky.

So what is the exact procedure for creating the revision?

The procedure is to make a new post, then just click on the site button at the top next to the arrow. But as I mentioned, this doesn’t really work on an already published post.
